Remember when I used to post on this blog? Oh, yes. Thanks to a certain friend who reminded me last weekend that in fact some do check this site. Melt me. Red Hook Criterium videos


Red Hook Crit was started by David Trimble who wanted to celebrate his birthday by throwing a bike race. Such a great idea. Be prepared in seeing a lot more cycling related post from me. I recently got my first road bike and I’m hooked, clipped, and loving it! I’m also constantly learning … like what is a criterium? According to Wiki, it’s a short course (usually less than 1 mile) race often run on closed-off city center streets with the race length determined by a number of laps or total time. Sweet. Here are some videos I’m crushing on from the 2013 Red Hook Crits … like I said, melt me!

Listening to Sherry Turkle

It all started with this article from the weblog Mockingbird. I was fascinated by the shared Colbert Report video featuring Sherry Turkle, an M.I.T. professor and author of Alone Together. Watching that video led me to her TED talk…

So interesting! Below are just a couple of notes and small snippets from the TED talk that I want to remember…
Sherry Turkle describes three gratifying fantasies in which our devices in our pockets are changing our minds and hearts. They are …

  1. that we can put our attention wherever we want it to be.
  2. that we will always be heard.
  3. that we will never have to be alone. (this being central to changing our psyches)

She goes on to say … “Being alone feels like a problem that needs to be solved. And so people try to solve it by connecting. But here, connection is more like a symptom than a cure. It expresses, but it doesn’t solve, an underlying problem. But more than a symptom, constant connection is changing the way people think of themselves. It’s shaping a new way of being.”

All I know is that this ‘new way of being’ is making me feel more alone. So with great hope (and open ears) I leave you with three steps from Sherry Turkle …

3 Steps on how to develop a more self-aware relationship with our devices, with each other and with ourselves …

  1. Make room for solitude (see it as a good thing, not a problem)
  2. Create sacred spaces for conversation.
  3. Listen to each other (including the boring bits).

Alright, off to the library. I apparently have a date night with this book!

40 Days

Breyers blast off

As I stood alone at home in my kitchen
wailing down on my housemates ice-cream
I thought to myself …
if someone could see me right now I probably wouldn’t be doing this.

this being … shoving my face with food.
I admit, I’m a closet eater!

I’ve noticed this about myself for some time. There is usually an excuse attached like … I’m stressed, it’s Friday, I’ll just have one bite …

Most people consider me a healthy eater … which I am. But put me alone with a bag of chips or a box of cookies … game over.

Well, I’m tired of this game. So for the next 40 days I will be posting everything … yes, everything I eat on Instagram. My hopes is that the frightening knowledge of my online community having access to what I eat will keep me accountable to care for my body as I will not be able to sneak away and indulge. I totally understand if I lose followers, no doubt I will be that annoying person posting images of food, however rest assured … this project will only last 40 days, then I’ll be back to posting photos of my dog, painted toenails, children … oh wait …

Anyways, thanks friends for being there … out there in cyberspace as it might be.
